English Nanny and Governess History Shiela Roth

Sheilagh Roth’s devotion to nannies comes from her happy childhood growing up in England with her wonderful nanny, Ida Rose. Born in England, Mrs. Roth created and founded the English Nanny & Governess School on the campus of her alma mater, Case Western Reserve University, where her husband was a department chairman. English Nanny & Governess School was the first nanny school in America will a full academic faculty dedicated exclusively to educating nannies and governesses. In 1993, the school opened its own campus in the nearby historic village of Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

As a director of this unique school, Mrs. Roth has received constant media attention since the school’s inception. She was invited by the First Lady, Hillary Clinton, to The White House to represent the nanny profession at the Conference on Childcare. She also was a judge for the “Parents Magazine Nanny Award” held at the Waldorf Hotel where Hillary Clinton presented the award.

Mrs. Roth has appeared on innumerable television interviews at the school, including “Good Morning America” and “Fox Cable News”, as well as interviews on television and radio shows across the country. Mrs. Roth has also been a guest on “Larry King Live”. Additionally, she has been featured in major articles published about the school, including in “The Times of London” as well as others in many American magazines and national newspapers.

In addition to being the Executive Director of English Nanny & Governess School, Mrs. Roth is the president of the American Council of Nanny Schools—a coalition of schools awarding the Certified Professional Nanny credential. She is a charter member and on the Executive Board of the International Nanny Association and a presenter and representative at the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

Mrs. Roth has been instrumental in requiring regulation for the AuPair programs. She has been an advisor for the Chronicle Guidance and the Department of Labor. For a quarter of a century, she has been a leading advocate for benefits and respect for American nannies.
