About the School
"Follow not where the pathway goes. Lead instead where there is no path. And leave a trail." -Lao Tzu
Mrs. Roth and her English nanny
In the early 1980’s when a significant number of American women began entering the professional workforce, they found that quality childcare was virtually non-existent. Sheilagh Roth was equally appalled at the poor quality of babysitters and applied her own experience of being reared by a nanny in England and her knowledge of the English tradition of nanny schools to found English Nanny & Governess School on the campus of Case Western Reserve University of Cleveland in 1984.
Mrs. Roth's vision, aided by CWRU faculty, helped to create an institute that was dedicated to changing the stereotypes and expectations of child rearing in America. English Nanny & Governess School helped to evolve the babysitter into a trained professional child care specialist.
English Nanny & Governess School has been highly influential in establishing many of the innovations now common in American childcare, including:
- Employment contracts with families that provide nannies and governesses with professional level salaries, health insurance, paid vacations, tax benefits and good working conditions.
- Compelling the U.S. government change its definition of nanny from domestic to child-care giver.
- Setting minimal standards for the international Au Pair programs in the United States.
- Making the profession a valuable and acceptable field for men as well as women.
English Nanny and Governess
School continues to be a role model
for training professional nannies and
governesses. Due to Mrs. Roth's interest in the arts, the
school emphasizes the cultural enrichment of
children. English Nanny & Governess School has a
rigorous college-level program taught by university
level faculty and renowned childcare specialists.
English Nanny & Governess School and Mrs. Roth have been featured in innumerable television and radio shows, magazine and newspaper articles. The school continues to fight for excellence in childcare as well as the protection of childcare professionals throughout the United States.
